What is a Discord language bridge?

How is a bridge different from a translation reply?

A translation reply adds another language to a conversation in the same channel. A bridge sends the translated message to a different channel. That difference matters when your members already have separate places to talk.

Use a bridge when the channels share a topic and members need messages to cross between them. Use replies or threads when everyone is comfortable talking in one channel.

How do pair and hub bridges work?

A pair bridge links two channels, each with a configured language, in both directions. For example, messages from an English channel go to a Spanish channel as Spanish, and messages from the Spanish channel travel back as English.

A hub bridge links one hub channel with several spoke channels. Hub messages go to the spokes. A message from a spoke goes to the hub and the other spokes, translated for each destination. Use this when the whole group should share the conversation.

BabelBot treats the source language as the language assigned to the channel. Keep those channel languages accurate and explain the expected language to members.

What happens to replies, edits, and deleted messages?

Replies carried across BabelBot bridge channels include a compact preview and a link to the matching Discord message. This helps members see what someone is answering in their own channel.

While the bridge message link is available, BabelBot updates linked copies when a member edits the source message. Text edits run through translation again and follow the same quota rules as a new bridge message. Deleting the source removes the linked copies. Older message links can expire, so those changes do not sync indefinitely.

Reactions also sync while the bridge message links exist. On the other copies, Discord shows BabelBot as the account that applied the reaction.

What should you check before enabling a bridge?

Tell members where their messages will appear. Check that people in the linked channels should be able to read those messages, especially when one channel has restricted access.

• Create the bridge in the dashboard and assign a language to each channel.
• Check View Channel, Send Messages, Read Message History, and Manage Webhooks in every linked channel. Check thread permissions too if your bridge uses threads.
• Send a message and reply from each side, then check where they appear.
• Edit and delete a test message to confirm how linked copies behave.
• Check channel rules for ordinary translation too, so you know whether the source channel will also get local translations.

How do you stop messages crossing the bridge?

Remove the bridge in the dashboard. Turning off ordinary automatic translation in a channel rule does not stop a configured bridge.

After changing the bridge, send a test message from each end. Confirm that messages no longer cross to channels you have disconnected. Do not use deleting a Discord channel as a substitute for changing your translation settings.
